Fortresses and Fortified Towns

The Dutch Water Line was a line of defensive works used from1629 - 1940, combining fortresses and the flooding of low-lying areas to keep enemies at bay. On this tour you will pass by a number of these fortresses. The scenery on this route comprises vast polders, windmills, characteristic farm houses and lush meadows. You’ll pass through pretty villages and cycle along the banks of splendid rivers. Take some time to explore the historical "glass town” of Leerdam. Big city Utrecht is best known for its romantic sunken canals and unique 14th Century inner-city wharves. The terrain on this cycle route is easy-going all the way. As on all our carefree bike tours, we provide luggage transfer and excellent

Day 2: Bunnik - Gorinchem
Ten minutes’ bike ride from Bunnik stands Fort Rijnauwen, one of the largest fortresses that made up the (New) Dutch Water Line defence system. It is surrounded by a moat and 31 hectares of grounds reportedly home to weasels, deer, bats, kingfishers and grass snakes. The grounds were closed off for many years enabling (rare species of) flora and fauna to flourish. Travelling south, you’ll reach "Glass town” Leerdam, a meeting place where glassblowers from many countries demonstrate their craft. Further on, you’ll come across two more Dutch Water Line fortresses: Asperen and Vuren. After crossing the River Waal by ferry boat you will reach infamous and interesting Loevesteijn Castle. The nearby fortified town of Woudrichem is also well worth a visit.

Day 3: Gorinchem - Bunnik
Gorinchem’s walled town centre has a long, turbulent history and over two hundred monuments to remember it by. It used to be big in fishery, markets and trade, but was often plagued by floods and conquerors (the town was the gateway to Holland).
Gorinchem is pronounced gorcum, by the way. Today you will cycle back up north to the big city of Utrecht. In the heart of the old inner city lies the peaceful Oude Gracht (= Old Canal). Its characteristic quaysides are unique to Utrecht. Nowadays they are the pleasant setting for waterside cafes. Don’t miss the pretty Museum Quarter. Utrecht is also great for shopping, especially on the quieter shopping streets.
