The town of Veenendaal can be reached by train from Amsterdam Airport. Free parking at the hotel.
Day 2: Veenendaal – Strand Nulde
Past old defensive Works of the Dutch Water Line, you will reach Arkemheen polder, a bird reserve and one of the oldest polder’s in the country (14th Century). Visit the steam driven pumping station that pumped excess water out of the polder from 1883 to 1983. Strand Nulde is a recreational area on Lake Veluwe.
Day 3: Strand Nulde – Zwolle
Along the shores of Randmeren lakes you will reach Harderwijk. As you will see by the remnants of its rich past, it used to be an important fishing port and trading town on the coast of the Zuiderzee. How different is its situation today! Just off the coast is now the largest artificial island in the world: the Flevopolder. Ride your bike atop Knardijk dike, with water left and right, onto this "new land”. Then make your way along the shore of Lake Veluwe to the beautiful medieval village of Elburg. You’ll love this place with its pretty buildings and tranquil ambiance! Today’s cycle tour ends in the market town of Zwolle. Surrounded by four rivers, it has always been a traffic junction, attracting traders and travellers. You will find remains of the medieval city wall and other monuments from the days when Zwolle was a member of the Hansa League.
Day 4: Zwolle – Deventer
On today’s stretch of the bike tour we will follow the River IJssel to Deventer. This delightful old Hansa town is situated very beautifully on the river and has preserved hundreds of historical buildings, many of them on Brink square. This is where you’ll also find a cake shop selling the local delicacy, which you might like to sample. Deventer is also famous for its markets, fairs and festivals.
Day 5: Deventer Arnhem
The River IJssel will also accompany you on the first part of today’s cycle trip. The views are great. Visit the historical town of Zutphen and other pretty towns located on the fringes of National Park Veluwezoom. It’s a truly lovely area. The route then continues, across woodland and heath land, up and over the Posbank which is seriously hilly by our standards. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
Day 6: Arnhem – Veenendaal
Today’s cycle route goes through the Southern part of the Veluwe and Veluwezoom National Park. After the Wageningse Berg and attractive Wageningen, you will visit Riverbank Nature Reserve "Blauwe Kamer”. At the foot of the Grebbeberg, the River Grift/Grebbe will lead you through Gelderland valley to your hotel in Veenendaal.
